What is the exam pattern of UPSC ESE?

UPSC ESE exam is conducted in three phases.

Phase I – Preliminary Examination (Objective Type) –

There are two papers in this phase examination in which 500 marks are given to the candidates. Paper 1st is based on General Studies and Engineering Aptitude while Paper 2nd is based on Engineering (CE/EE/E&T/ME). That is, if you have chosen CE to give this exam then Paper 2nd will be based on your CE. Similarly, if you choose any other stream, you will have to give Paper 2nd of the same stream.

 

Phase II – Main Examination (Traditional Paper) –

You will be able to appear in this examination if you have appeared in Phase I ie Preliminary Examination (Objective Type). In this stage of examination also you will have to give two papers for which you will be given a total of 600 marks. Paper 1 will be on Engineering Discipline-I (CE/ ME /EE /E&T) while Paper 2 will be on Engineering Discipline-II (CE/ME/EE/E&T).

 

Stage III – Personal Interview –

Those candidates who have qualified in both stages are called for this stage of examination. 200 are given to the student in this examination stage. The final merit list is prepared by adding up the marks secured in all three stages. The posts for the job are allotted to the candidates on the basis of marks.
